The French Alps
Only 2 hours east of Lyon, the French Alps welcomes you! This magnificent range of mountains which rises to 15780 feet with the famous Mont Blanc is one of the most beautiful natural area in the world. In summer or winter, chose the Alps and enjoy a big breath of pur air:
The French Alps are unique for the beauty of their natural sites combining high peaks, mountains, valleys and lakes. Throughout history, several cities have been built and flourished to be perfectly part of these beautiful settings:
Annecy: located at the southern end of the Lake of the same name and surrounded by the snow-capped peaks of the Alps, the Venice of Savoy is full of charm, authenticity and style. The old town built under medieval times is crossed by beautiful canals and will charm you with its many flowered bridges, terraces, restaurants, etc. On Tuesdays, Fridays and Sunday mornings, the heart of Annecy beats to the rhythm of its lively and colorful market. We recommend visitors to do the one-hour boat cruise on the lake.
Chamonix: from its city center and in 20 minutes, the cable car “Aiguille du Midi” takes you up to 12605 feet to admire the Mont Blanc Peak and the Alps Chain. This is “the must” for high Mountain lovers!
Aix Les Bains: located at the edge of Lake Bourget, this city has written its history along the water. Founded in the 1st century by the Romans, Aix-les-Bains became famous for its thermal baths which attracted wealthy and royalty families from all over Europe. Nowadays, the City is about 30,000 inhabitants and is still the first thermal town in France. Things to do: a city tour in the Old Town, a cruise on Lake Bourget, visit the Abbey of Hautecombe, play golf and of course enjoy one its famous thermal baths.
Chambery: located one hour from Lyon, the City of the Dukes is the historic capital of the House of Savoy. At the foot of the Massif des Bauges and the Chartreuse, Chambery is a city of 60,000 inhabitants looking at the mountains and its many outdoor activities. The beauty of the old town located at the feet of the Dukes of Savoy Castle, will surprise you!
Gastronomy and wines: the best known dishes are based on hot cheese, such as the famous Savoy fondue and Tartiflette. Many cheeses are produced in the Alps, the famous ones are called reblochon, Tomme de Savoie, Abondance, Mont-Cenis blue cheese. Bourget and Annecy Lakes provide freshwater fish such as trout, fera and fishes from salmon family. With 5000 acres of vineyards and 25 different grape varietals, the wines of Savoy will perfectly accompany these dishes. Apremont, Chignin, Ripaille, Arbin, etc. are some wine suggestions among the 20 geographical denominations of Savoy.
Sport activities: The French Alps are a great playground for outdoor sports activities. In winter, go skiing, snowshoeing, dog sledding, sledding, etc. In summer, opt for hiking, rafting, mountain biking, climbing, paragliding, etc.
